Alone on the Road — Part One

How I Took

Myself on Vacation

for the First Time

A smiling woman on a solo trip standing above the turquoise sea and rocky coastline, enjoying the freedom and beauty of a summer day.

There are only a few hours left before I leave.

I am looking at my almost-packed suitcase and two cats sitting curiously on top of it. In front of me is the notebook where, for years, I have been writing down my thoughts and learning who I am.

Tonight, I am going on vacation.

Alone.

Stone steps shaded by trees leading toward a bright Mediterranean passage, surrounded by greenery and old walls.

My thoughts return to a year ago, when I was sitting just like this, waiting for the time to leave — the same, and yet completely different.

What has changed since then?

Me.

I have changed.

My first solo vacation was a collection of questions and smaller questions, most of them tied to my safety. I searched frantically online, looking for answers to that big, echoing question:

What if…?

A view from a stone tunnel toward the sea, with rocky cliffs and bright blue sky in the distance.

And do you know what happened out of all my worst predictions?

Nothing.

That is why I now feel the need to share my experience with you.

Travel is beautiful. Sometimes, we are truly privileged to take the most important person in our life with us.

Ourselves.

So, if you are hesitating, if you are feeling sorry for yourself, if others are trying to talk you out of it — do not listen.

Listen to yourself.

In the posts to come, I will try to share with you several important things about solo travel. The kind of things you may not be able to find online, in guides, or in manuals.

Until then, I am sending you my warmest goodbye.

I have to hurry.

My beautiful journey is waiting for me.

I leave this song here as the soundtrack of my departure. For the sea that awaits me, for the road opening before me, and for that quiet joy of knowing you are in the right place — with yourself.
